Do you know the Seven Bridges of Königsberg?
In short, the problem was to find
a walk through the city that would cross
each bridge once and only once.
Euler, born 306 years ago and honored by Google today,
proved that the problem has no solution.
Leonhard Euler was a pioneering Swiss
mathematician and physicist and counts to the
most important mathematicians.
He also worked in many other fields
with amazing results: The collected works from Euler
fill 60--80 quarto volumes. Pierre-Simon Laplace,
you might know him, said about Euler:
"Read Euler, read Euler, he is the master of us all."
Most of his time, he lived and worked in
St. Petersburg (Russia) and Berlin (Prussia, now Germany).
Hiw works had large influence in todays
Mathematical notation, Analysis, Number theory,
Graph theory and most important: Logic ;-)
