Summary:

A camera has got to deliver incredible pictures and be practical to use. Sony did that with their new FX6, and they also created the best aufofocus and low light performance full frame cinema camera at the same time.

The FX6 has all the color capabilities you could want in-camera, including S-Log., S-gamut3.cine, S-Cinetone, LUTs and a full multi-matrix built in!

Having a matrix allows for extremely detailed broadcast-camera style matching, basically unheard of in a camera at this price. It also has the same color profiles as the rest of the Sony FX / Venice line- we didn't even mention the internal variable ND, which is an incredible benefit to the native high ISO of 12,800.

If you are looking for a small low-cost professional cinema camera and were evaluating cameras from Blackmagic, Canon, Panasonic and Red, you need to include this camera on your short list.

Notes that didn't make this video:

Team Hot Rod spent dozens of hours over weeks testing the FX6 in all manner of configurations, these include imaging tests, usability test, including mounting in several configurations such as on the Tilta Float and the DJI Ronin S2. The FX6 is easy to balance and NOT difficult to use, nor is it confusing. We estimate that 30 minutes is all that's required to learn the user interface.

It's possible to fly through all the menus using only the menu and back buttons, along with classic multifunction knob (aka rotary encoder) similar to like the kind found on many broadcast cameras.

The FX6 gives you several ways to interface with the menu and if you somehow missed the revolution of the multifunction knob and are only familiar with interfaces that use touch screen and d-pads, scroll wheels or joysticks, you don't know what you are missing. The multifunction knob allows you to zoom through menus without taking you eyes off the monitor.

Videos offering that kind of information could be factual as easily as they could be meaningless. Before believing any conclusion expressed in a "technical" video or presentation we offers the following caveat emptor.

We've noticed that many relevant details to imaging testing are often omitted in public videos, articles and blogs. Most tests we've seen in a public space lack appropriate context and also a point of reference. Could the information still be relevant, sure. But without the context and point of reference it's much harder to tell.

Videos with appropriate testing, context and a point of reference are rare or essentially impossible to find in public, as they don't make for either short or particularly entertaining presentation, unless you are frankly, just like us- hardcore geeks. This level of hardcore imaging and technical geekdom could be particularly unpleasant to view for those who also don't share the same vocabulary.

The goal of real imaging tests is generate performance conclusions, hopefully only derived scientifically. We have endeavored to never half-ass the truth or story about any technology. Our YouTube videos are only a summary of our collected tests and our offer our best answers as to "why."
