KATE Forbes yesterday slammed “devastating” plans to ban fishing in coastal regions.
Her blast paved the way for her first Holyrood clash with Humza Yousaf since she finished runner- up to him in the SNP leadership campaign in March.
She said then that “the best way forward” would be to bin proposals for Highly Protected Marine Areas, which would set strict limits on fishing and other activities in at least 10 per cent of Scotland’s waters.
Ms Forbes said yesterday there had been a “huge backlash”. She warned it would be “hugely devastating for islanders and fishermen” if the scheme went ahead.
The ex-Finance Secretary added: “It’s important the Scottish Government works with coastal communities. Fishing supports so many livelihoods.
“If we cut off that lifeline to the sea then it could jeopardise population recovery.”
