In North Central Florida this abandoned shopping plaza is a know landmark if you are traveling east or west along highway 40. Let's dig a little deeper explore more than just the site. We'll talk briefly about the history of the property and how it's come to be a dilapidated abandoned place in Florida.
Lets start by stepping back in time and survey the area by aerial imagery. As early as 1984, this property has been recorded from above and we can assess that the lot development has remained fairly consistent from then on. I could find no prior information of this lot before 1981 so it’s safe to assume this building has been the only use for the last 40 years.
Here you can read the metes and bounds description still utilizing the term “chains” meaning 66feet. Indicative to an older description and especially out in an undeveloped area.
Using google street we can see this small strip mall change through the years and start to realize that time can change in the blink of an eye. The earliest street view photo I could acquire was from 2007, right before a major recession and in my opinion already effected by the huge downturn. The next timestamp is 2011, and just as the economy was improving so were image sensors. We can see more detail and, generally this plaza looks more vibrant and filled with energy. At this point, 2014, the economy has come back and the a new business has eagerly taken over and it looks as though the entire strip mall is occupied. My theory though, these businesses weren’t necessarily ready to sustain themselves so soon after a major economic crisis and prematurely entered the market only to fail shortly after. As well in 2015, the ownership changed hands. By 2018 this plaza was completely abandoned and quickly deteriorated to the point we are at today. Unfortunately, I could find no indication that any improvement plan is in the works for this property and sadly, it’ll probably just be demolished. Another memory of the golden era will be lost. But for now, let’s go and check out what remains and hope for better days for the Lake Waldena Business center.
If you have any questions about it just let me know.
