Queen Elizabeth danced with African leader & Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah. This was during a 1961 visit to newly independent Ghana,
They danced to a Ghanain song "High Life." The event was a symbolic moment in the history of the Commonwealth.
The Queen traveled to Ghana despite opposition from the British Government. They were wary of a visit when Ghana was cozying up to the Soviet Union. Kwame Nkrumah had also threatened to leave the Commonwealth, an association of former British colonies. Ghana was particularly unstable at the time with bombings in the capital 5 days before the Queens tour, blamed on Nkrumahs political rivals.
Queen Elizabeth insisted on this tour despite the danger to ensure Ghana didn’t leave the Commonwealth. Not only did she achieve that, but the queen also helped Ghana secure a Quarter Billion Dollar for the Volta Dam Project, a centerpiece of Nkrumahs economic plans.
