“YES” is a positive marker to mark good behavior, and “NO” marks bad behavior. This implies that when your dog sits on command, you must say YES immediately, but when for instance it lies down on a SIT command, you must say NO immediately to mark the wrong behavior. Markers however do more than just mark (reinforce) behavior- they can also serve as a means of encouraging your dog, when it appears to be uncertain, to do what is expected of it or refrain from doing what it shouldn’t do.
When dogs get used to these markers, it becomes easy to stop your dog from going where it shouldn’t for instance by simply saying NO when you see it heading in that direction. If your dog suddenly stops behind you when you are walking into a new space like the Vet’s for instance, a simple YES will go a long way to encourage it to proceed because it is allowed to. These are just a couple of examples of how markers will serve you well in more ways than you KNOW, and in this video I show you another example.
