What Is Condensed Milk Bread?
This Bread is of the Japanese origin. You may know it as “Japanese milk bread” or “Hokkaido milk bread,” named for the region’s famous milk. It’s the peak of indulgence, golden brown on the outside and soft and fluffy inside with a hint of sweetness courtesy of the most important ingredient: sweetened condensed milk.
What makes this bread so darn delicious you may ask, is that each ingredient (flour, yeast, butter, sugar, milk and sweetened condensed milk) perfectly balances its counterparts to ensure a light, cloud-like bread.
If you have some experience baking bread, this recipe shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. Beginners can learn a lot from this recipe, too, and there are plenty of YouTube tutorials to walk you through it step by step.
The way you eat condensed milk bread is up to you. Slice it into sandwich bread for a grilled cheese with a hint of sweetness, or tear it off chunk by chunk. Either way, this bread is bound to become a staple.
Okay, condensed milk. Don’t you just love the sweetness and the smoothness of that divine liquid? I could lick it out of a spoon and not stop, actually. It is like a ready-made dessert on its own.
But this bread. This is a more adult way of enjoying condensed milk rather than having it drip down your spoon, then into your arms. Japanese Condensed Milk Bread, just the sound of that got me intrigued.
This bread is filled with a sweet, buttery condensed milk filling. It also has condensed milk in the dough to give it that extra note of sweetness. Not too sweet though. Because the condensed milk is baked in the bread, the sweetness is tapered down making this bread just appropriately sweet but definitely the satisfying kind of sweet.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup milk (250ml) room temperature
¼ cup sweetened condensed milk (75g)
1 egg
2 tbsp sugar (30g)
2 and ¼ tsp instant yeast (7g)
3 and ¼ cups All purpose flour (400g) plus more for kneading
1 tsp salt (5g)
¼ cup softened butter (50g)
Glaze:
1 tbsp softened butter (45g)
1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk(45g)
THE SECRET INGREDIENT IS LOVE
JAPANESE CONDENSED MILK BREAD: THE PROCESS
* Start off by adding 20ml of whole milk in a mixing bowl, to this add 1/4 cup of condensed milk, 1 egg, 2tablespoon of Sugar, 2&1/4 Dried instant yeast, 3 cups of all purpose flour, 1teaspoon of salt and 1/4 cup of Soft room temp Butter
* Knead the dough well, I reckon it takes about 15minutes to 20minutes until a perfect dough is formed. After this cover and store in a warm place so the dough rises to double its size for 1 hour.
* After the 1 hour punch out the dough to remove air bubbles, divide into desired balls, this recipe should give about 8 equal size balls and place them in a baking tray brushed with butter and cover then place for another 45minutes
* After the 45 minutes brush and egg wash on the bread and bake in a preheated oven of 180C/360F for at least 22 minutes
* After the bread is done baking, Glaze the bread and serve while hot
