In this video, Let's answer the first question - is Nikon D3100 outdated?

Well, it's been released in 2010, so In DSLR terms, that is an outdated camera. That doesn't mean that it takes worse pictures now than it did when it was new. It has its limitations and may not live up to current expectations that people have of new entry level DSLRs, but it still works fine.

I mean, based on my experience with it, it still takes great images. Remember, Just because there are new shiny things on the market doesn't mean older gear is obsolete.

Now...

When SHOULD you upgrade?

I can think of two reasons.

1) First has to do with the lenses.

Nikon started shipping focus-by-wire AF-P lenses that aren't compatible with the D3100. You might consider upgrading if you want one of those lenses. But if you want to stick with the current camera then in the next video I'll share the best lenses that ARE compatible with the D3100.

2) The second one is If you find yourself limited by your D3100. In that case, it's worth thinking about what you need and go from there. It might be a good idea to invest in other things like lenses and lighting.

When looking at a possible upgrade determine what you need, not just what you want.

What you can do is start by making a list of how your current camera/lens limits you.

- What will it not allow you to do that you want to do?
- What feature does your current great not have you want/need?

Could be lack of image size, doesn’t perform well in low light, slow auto focus, to heavy or any other number of possible things. Be specific about what you need you do not have.

Once you make that list you can determine what your needs are, not just wants. Then you can search for something that will fix those problems. Of course you may find that what have works fine, the problem isn’t the gear.

3) What are the great cameras you can upgrade to?

Well, if you're looking for budget-friendly Nikon crop sensor DSLR I highly encourage you have a look at Nikon D7200 or even D7100.

Reasons why you’ll love it:
- it is a camera you can grow into,
- it’s able to autofocus with old Nikon lenses,
- great AF system and ergonomics,

(Just to name a few.)
