Will offering 30 hours of ‘free’ formal childcare for babies from 9 months old get mothers ‘back to work’ and grow the economy? Or will it separate children from their parents for marginal economic gains? Is this the best policy for babies and children or should we instead use the £4bn to support families to be able to live on one income while children are small so they can choose how to look after their own children?
