STORYLINE:
Thousands of fans gathered at Accra's airport on Monday night to welcome home Ghana's national football team after they were knocked out in the quarter finals of the World Cup.
The team, nicknamed the "Black Stars", disembarked from their plane and made their way along a red carpet to a rapturous welcome from their fans.
Ghana lost the quarter final match to Uruguay 4-2 on penalties on Friday, after being denied victory by a cynical handball and a missed penalty in the last seconds of extra time.
The Ghanaians were the last African team in the tournament and team captain Stephen Appiah told the crowd on Monday that the Black Stars "did our best to make history for our own people in Ghana and Africa."
Support for Ghana swelled before last week's match, as they were the only one of six African teams in the tournament to progress past the group stage.
Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and tournament hosts South Africa were all went out after the first round.
In previous World Cups, Cameroon had reached the quarter finals in 1990 while Senegal managed it in 2002, but no African team has yet got further than that.
Appiah promised that Ghana's team would qualify for the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.
