Lorigon’s story began with a tiny set of tracks. Samburu Trust scouts knew something was amiss when they spotted the lone footprints of an elephant calf on Ol Malo Ranch. They tracked the baby for several days, but he remained elusive. Scouts would follow him down to a water hole, where he would had a furtive drink, only to evaporate into the bush.
Ultimately, however, Lorigon’s condition caught up with him. On 1st February 2022, scouts found him lying in the shade. His strength was ebbing away with each little breath. Left on his own, it was a distinct possibility that he would never get to his feet again. KWS greenlit a rescue, and we rushed to bring this baby to safety.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.
