Japan killed 333 minke whales during an annual whaling expedition, of which 122 were pregnant. Researchers have defended the killings as part of scientific research. Japan has hunted whales for centuries. Their meat was a key source of protein during the post-World War II when the country was desperately poor. Although Japan promised to maintain a moratorium on hunting whales in 1986, they never stopped.
