The culture in a salon exists whether you develop it or not, but as the leader if you don’t consciously decide what your company’s culture is going to be it will just happen, it will evolve over time all on its own and it probably won’t be what you want or what is best for the salon.
Ideally you want a salon culture that embraces the values of trust, productivity, fun, teamwork… not just as words but as a way of being.
Building a strong culture that is good for everyone is ultimately the role of the salon manager but everyone on the team has a responsibility to protect and develop the culture as it will constantly evolve over time.
It’s a problem in many salons…
Sometimes there will be people on your team that are destroying the culture, this is a problem in many salons. Occasionally the people doing it don’t mean to, but for whatever reason they are usually resistant to change and feel that even though they don’t own the business, they feel that they have the right to control the direction of business. They don’t.
As a salon owner, ultimately your goal is to have happy staff and a productive business and everything you do as a manager is designed to make that a reality.
Unfortunately sometimes those on your team lack the trust in the managers decisions and do everything they can to undermine the business and prevent positive change and therefore damage the culture in the process.
What’s important to you?
Culture is a lot about what you as a salon value as important, not just from the perspective of creating a harmonious environment in which to work, but also from the perspective of making the business run as productively and efficiently as possible.
On a successful team everyone is responsible for the culture that exists but above all, the leader has to be decisive and not be afraid to take charge. Remember, if you permit it, you promote it!
