STORYLINE:
Dozens of protesters concerned about what they call corporate greed in America have been arrested in the District of Columbia.
The arrests came as demonstrators from across the country converged on K Street, home to many of the city's most influential lobbying firms.
On Wednesday afternoon, about three dozen protesters lay in the centre of a busy downtown intersection as police issued warnings to move or face arrest.
The protesters were carried into police vans as demonstrators on the sidewalk jeered at officers.
Protesters marched across K Street in a demonstration that led police to shut down several busy downtown streets. They included participants in the Occupy D.C. encampment and other groups sympathetic to their message about income inequality.
JoAnn Herr from Oakland, California celebrated the cross section of society that had come to rally.
"This isn't a rally of just young people. All these people, or a good portion, they're in their 40s, 50s and 60s. They can't get jobs, they're losing their homes, and I think the world should know, or at least our Congress people should know that this isn't just the young people. This is everybody. This is America here," said Herr.
Police have blocked off the downtown street while keeping a close eye on the group, which has been peaceful so far.
A tent has been erected next to McPherson Square, where Occupy DC has had its encampment since October.
