As crowds flock to Alki Beach for the Independence holiday, neighbors are looking to Seattle city leaders for help to address the crime and violence that sometimes follows.
Seattle police took a high-profile approach this 4th of July as people packed into West Seattle for sun, sand and celebrations. Officers staged in several locations, which many neighbors hope will have an impact on the street racing and gun crimes that keep the community on edge.
Other changes are also gaining traction following the deadly shooting of a 22-year-old man late last month. People who live in the area said police patrols in general are more frequent, especially at night when much of the trouble surfaces. Neighbors are also pushing for changes at parking lots where people gather for late-night parties, then stage street races that sometimes lead to violence.
