The field of AI is evolving so rapidly that is difficult for researchers in the field, not to mention investors and family offices, to keep up.
Dr. Craig Kaplan has been researching AI and intelligent systems since the 1980s. He is also a retired Hedge Fund manager.

* What are some the current challenges facing AI researchers?
* What are some of the important recent developments in the field?
* From an investing perspective, one of the most frequent questions I get is: “Is this an AI bubble? Is AI over-hyped?” What’s your response to these questions?
* Can you talk a little about AI safety. What’s the current state and where do we need to go from here?
* There have been calls to halt or pause AI development. Do you agree with that or is there a different approach?
* We are beginning to hear about Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in connection with new high profile acquisitions. For example, Amazon just acquired executives from the AGI startup, Adept and is forming an AGI group. Also, Microsoft acquired the AI company Inflection for $650m in March of this year. What is AGI? Do you have any comments on the acquisitions?
* In June of this year, Ilya Sutskever – the brains behind OpenAI – left to start a new company around something called SuperIntelligence. Can you explain what SuperIntelligence is, and why we are hearing about it now?
* What is the market opportunity associated with AGI and SuperIntelligence?
* When do AI experts think SuperIntelligence will be developed?
* I understand your company has also been working on designs for safe SuperIntelligence. What can you tell us about your approach? How is your approach different from what others are doing?
* Which technology companies are best positioned to develop SuperIntelligence, according to the approach you outlined?
* Are you open to working with these technology companies?
* Can you summarize you thoughts about the future of AI over the next 3-5 years? What are some takeaways for investors and family offices?
* As an investor I look to answer: How will an industry be disrupted by advances in AI? How soon could that happen? What are the risks and opportunities in that disruption? What am I missing?
* For example investor Brad Jacobs writes in his book… I looked at doing a roll-up of accounting firms, but there’s a chance that accountants will be replaced by generative AI over the next decade. I could build up a big accounting business over the next few years and see it suddenly go into a black hole because people start using AI to close their books
* Jacobs continues… I don’t think we’ll need a human insurance broker in ten years. Also, at some point in the not-too-distant future, I can see AI replacing much, if not most, of what paralegals and even lawyers do. Many jobs in journalism, advertising, and other communications are likely to become obsolete—and, ironically, AI also puts tech jobs at risk, including coding
* At the same time, there’s a lot of money to be made by identifying industries that might benefit strongly from AI over the next 20 years; these include parts of the healthcare, retailing, homebuilding and manufacturing sectors
* Will CEOs get replaced by AI? Every human function that can be broken down into rules, systematic processes, and logical decision-making based on historical results can be replaced
