The Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest dedicated to the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helena was built between 1654 -1658 and consecrated in 1658. The 17th century Cathedral standing on the small hill in the heart of Bucharest is surrounded by several remarkable historical buildings. The Bell Tower (1698) rises to the East and it is the only remaining vestige of the original walled monastic complex. The Patriarchal Residence with a Brâncovenesc style porch and a Chapel built in 1723 is the residence of the Patriarch. The chapel of the Patriarchal Residence was built in the same time with the Patriarchal Cathedral, between 1656 and 1658, being completed in 1723, when some renovations and interior mural painting were made. A monumental building with a portico and a characteristic dome, built in the early 20th century, houses today the Palace of the Patriarchate. The building constructed in neo-classical style, with a dome similar to the one of the Romanian Athenaeum, sheltered the National Assembly and later the country’s Parliament.
