Bamberg (medieval: Babenberg , Bambergisch : Bambärch) is a Franconian independent city in the Bavarian administrative region of Upper Franconia and location of the district office of Bamberg . It is the largest medium-sized town in Bavaria, a university , school and administrative town, the seat of a higher regional court and the office of the public prosecutor in Bamberg , an important economic center in Upper Franconia and the seat of the archdiocese of the same name . The city is designated in state planning as the regional center of western Upper Franconia and is part of the metropolitan region of Nuremberg.
The old town is one of the largest largely intact historic city centers in Germany and has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Well-known buildings are the Old Town Hall , " Little Venice " and the Cathedral Square including the Old Court , the New Residence and the four-tower Bamberg Cathedral , one of the former imperial cathedrals. In addition, Bamberg is known nationally for its diverse beer tradition as well as for the traditional market gardens with large areas under cultivation in the middle of the city.
