Marshall Origin 20 w/ Headfirst mod (tweaked to be close to 2203, not hot)
I’ve been after a good ‘AC/DC’ or ‘The Cult’ type sound that would lend itself to almost anything really for most of my life, and I’ve owned many a Marshall from ‘plexi’ to 2203 and JCM800, JVM, you name it, and while I could get my sound out of every one of them, they’ve always been rather unwieldy, too loud, or just too hard to record the sound I hear, all kinds of issues.
And honestly, since I did the headfirst mod to my Origin 20, I need look no further.
I think it sounds just as good as any great JCM800 does, but it can do it at much more usable volume, much more portably, and it can also do a warmer, more organic clean or ‘clean’ and it even has a built in boost switchable with a footswitch.
It’s just damned perfect Marshall to me now. Absolutely. Whatever you play with it, it’s just awesome.
In true Marshall style it’s very unforgiving a sound that reveals all mistakes or too gently played notes, so for fluid solos you’d need to put a distortion pedal in front, but hell – we all did that already in the 80s.
Here it’s plain and raw, in half power mode, absolutely no FX or anything, straight cord to the amp.
Eminence Governor 12” in a DIY speaker enclosure.
You be the judge how you like it – I have never had a Marshall I liked better.
