Flowers of the Forest: Arguably the most popular of Laments played on the Great Highland Bagpipes. Flowers of the Forest is a Scottish folk tune commemorating the defeat of the Scottish army of James IV at the Battle of Flodden in September 1513. The words describe the grief of women and children at the loss of their young men and the tune is played at services of remembrance, funerals, and other occasions to commemorate war dead. Adopted by Canadian forces as their official Funeral March It was also played at the funeral of Queen Victoria in 1901, which probably explains its popularity as Funeral Lament. Although it can be found written as a 2/4 it is played here as a 6/8 which gives it more of a relaxed than rigid feel.
