#30Bach Episode 15: "He was Superman"
At last, we bring it all together with the return of the Aria. It's the same place we began, and yet it feels different, colored by the journey. A journey through many different worlds, different places, different people's lives.
Before departing, we'll hear some of the music that Bach's music has inspired, from the Nicholas Kitchen's transcription of the Goldberg Variations for string quartet, to João Luiz's contemporary piece, "Seven Meetings," drawing from the tradition of counterpoint that is common both to Bach and to the music is mother country, Brazil. Lowry Yankwich, creator of 30 Bach, plays the final aria.
Featuring: João Luiz, Nicholas Kitchen, Hie-Yon Choi, Angela Hewitt, Rex Isenberg, Rachel Breen, and Ken Kocienda.
Thank you for listening!
More about 30 Bach:
Composed in the 18th century, J.S. Bach's "Goldberg Variations" have become a legendary part of the classical music repertoire. But the piece is special in its enduring power, which continues to inspire a diverse array of artists and music-lovers around the world, from architects to engineers, to dancers and Brazilian guitarists.
The piece has 30 variations. Every week, we grapple with a new set of variations, speaking with musicians at their instruments and devoted listeners who tell us about the music theory, history, and personal significance of the music. Each episode concludes with a performance of the music, building toward a musical collage of the entire work.
