One of Canada's answers to Donna Summer (the other being France Joli), Patsy Gallant was born in 1948 in Campbellton, New Brunswick. One of ten children, she joined two of her siblings at the age of three and performed as The Gallant Sisters at fairs and on local television and radio programs. When she was ten the family moved to Montreal, and in 1967 she released an independent single and appeared on national television shows like Music Hop, Discotheque and Smash, which led to her own weekly variety show on Television de Radio Canada.
Throughout the '70s Gallant released albums in French and English, most of which were modest hits in Quebec and the rest of Canada, but failed to make much of an impression outside the country. But her 1976 album Are You Ready For Love was an international hit, with the single "From New York To L.A." making the top ten in Canada, the U.S. and England. The song is based on a French melody that has nothing to do with the struggles of a successful singer finding time for her lover! After releasing two more popular albums and winning Juno Awards for Best Female Vocalist in 1976 and 1977, Gallant's popularity faded as the disco craze came to an end and she left the record business in the mid-'80s for musical theatre, performing in Cats, Nunsense, a musical biography of Edith Piaf, and the Paris production of Starmania.
