Last week, the Owl Rescue Centre referred a call to us as they were too far out to help so late at night.
This absolutely beautiful Juvenile Black Sparrowhawk (Accipiter melanoleucus) had been found barely moving, sitting next to a main road in Centurion.
By 9.30pm, Hennie, (the kind gent who stopped to check on the bird), had made the long trip through to Benoni to drop off the youngster, and a full examination was underway.
Incredibly, nothing was found to be broken despite the youngster’s precarious position on the main road.
The Black Sparrowhawk however, was found to be dehydrated, a little thin, and covered in blackjacks with nasty burs which had matted and bound wing feathers to his body feathers in clumps. He had obviously been grounded for some time, and managed to walk through some rough areas.
The hydration was first addressed, and we then offered the gorgeous juvenile some food which he demolished in no time!
Realizing that we were there to help him, he settled down quickly to enjoy the cleanup, allowing us to lift his wings, work through the matted bur knots, and pull off countless blackjacks.
A few hours later, and he had settled down, far more comfortable, with a full tummy, had pressed himself up against the heating pad, closed his eyes, gone to sleep.
We will bring more on this little Sparrowhawk, as he has ended up in some very special hands! We really are very blessed to work with some incredible people!
