So this is a quick video I threw together to show that space tethers are absolutely possible in Space Engineers. However, it should be noted that there are several issues with doing so.
First issue you'll run into is the physics blocks limit. That appears to be when you have more than 7k blocks on a single grid, but I don't have an exact amount for that issue. The fix is to stop building on the current grid and start a new grid. You can do this by using pistons, rotors, or connectors+landing gears. I fixed it by using advanced rotors.
The next issue you'll run into is the 8192 block distance limit. This is hardcoded into the game and you can not place any more blocks on a grid that is 8192 blocks long. You can still merge, but then you'll run straight into the physics issue. The workaround for that is the same as above.
However, there's a caveat to using the new grid approach. It turns out that the block offset location is set when using merge blocks, and it uses the largest grid to determine the offset location. In my case, I attempted to merge the crawler on a new grid that only had 8 or so blocks, but my crawler itself was over 30 blocks. The fix for this is to just make the new grid you're attaching to have more blocks than the crawler.
And last, but not least, there's the garbage collection of the elevator itself. I ended up just sticking batteries on the individual segments just to make them powered and set my garbage collection to ignore powered stations.
As a precaution, once a section was complete, I also set that section to a station rather than a ship, so that locked it into place indefinitely.
I hope this helps any struggling space engineers out there!
