The Great Meteora, or Monastery of the Transfiguration, is an Orthodox Christian monastery, which is part of the Meteora monasteries, located in Greece, in the Thessaly region. Located at 534 m above sea level, it is accessed by stairs carved into the rock. A first chapel existed since the fourteenth century, founded by Saint Athanasius of the Meteores. The current monastery was founded in 1536 and built between 1545 and 1582 following the example of the churches of Mount Athos (with 3 shells and double exonarthex). The original chapel was integrated into the present church as a sanctuary and decorated with frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries.
