In the film Sholay, there's a scene where Thakur Baldev Singh returns to his village after retirement.
On returning, he finds that his family has been massacred by Gabbar Singh.
A weird sound plays in the background to enhance his bewilderment. Pancham fans were
eager to find out how that sound was created or which instrument was used for it.
Finally, after many years, one fan was successful in finding not only the weird instrument but also the man who had played it.
Pancham(R D Burman) had created this instrument himself by using the casing of a truck differential – a round metal part in the middle of the two rear tyres.
That part was welded on both ends by metal rods and the bow of the sarangi was used to play on those metal rods to create that weird sound!
The man who had played this instrument, Rijraam, is dead, but this Pancham fan tracked down his son.
This instrument was found in a locked room in his home.
He actually played this very instrument to create that weird sound! (source - whatsapp)
