Review:

Dolce & Gabbana was my favourite designer a couple years back. Dolce used to be split into “D&G” (the lower end label), and “Dolce and Gabbana” (the higher end runway label). This splitting of the brand, however, came to an end in 2011 in North America and 2012 in Europe/ the rest of the world. “D&G” was the more casual of the two, while “Dolce and Gabbana” was a lot more sleek, interesting, more formal, and the thing most people noticed: more expensive. This jacket is from the last season of “Dolce and Gabbana” and it shows in the detail.

When you slip this jacket on the first thing you notice is how light it is. It feels like you are wearing one of those shell wind breakers your mom made you wear in the 90’s, it just seems like the jacket should weigh more. This is partly due to the weight of the fabric, but mostly due to how the down is processed. The down is removed from the quills to make the feathers as light as possible. The jacket is then filled section by section to make sure there is an even distribution of down, as well as making sure the stitching does not cross over the feathers. I won’t pretend this is a warm jacket though, its not filled to the point of Canada Goose or Mackage. You should still be good at anything warmer than 0 degrees Celsius though.

Back when the 2 lines of Dolce were split, Dolce & Gabbana put a big plaque on everything. Jackets, jeans, gloves, bags- doesn’t matter what it was, it had a plaque. They have since moved away from this on a lot of items in an effort to reduce branding, but these old pieces still have it. This sleeve’s plaque shoves that “Dolce & Gabbana” in your face along with the address of the flagship store in Milan. I liked this a lot at the time, but I’m over it now. I prefer to avoid the branding just because there are so many knockoff items around.

The leather detail is one of the defining things of this piece. The leather straps with the palladium plated hardware are used all over the jacket as clasps on the neck, cuffs, pocket, and sides. To be honest I never use any of these, and they’re hard to adjust. They are pretty cool though, especially the closure on the collar and that’s what counts. The contrasting denim has some nice stitching detail as well. This detail is missed at first glance though, you don’t really notice the stitching until you move past the shiny hardware.

The two internal pockets are a nice to have as well. The jacket itself is pretty loose fitting so you can get your phone and wallet in there no problem without having to worry about breaking a sleek silhouette. The colour is great for fall as well, it’s a nice break from all the black and grey around this time of year.

These old Dolce pieces are really interesting, they don’t do this kind of stuff anymore. There has been a real trend towards a more sleek and minimal style over the past few years by a lot of designers. Gone are the days of Dolce leather jackets with zippers everywhere. Instead you’ll find a huge embroidered crown on an otherwise normal sweater. Dolce still has the runway flair, but the ready to wear collection just hasn’t been the same the past 3 years.
