This beach resort community offered African Americans a place to experience "Recreation and Relaxation Without Humiliation."

As our protagonist takes in the serene beauty of American Beach, she marvels at its historic significance. Co-founded by A.L. Lewis and his Afro-American Life Insurance Company, American Beach quickly became a beloved destination for African American families. Despite having little formal education, Lewis rose to prominence as a world traveler, investor, philanthropist, and the first African-American millionaire in Florida. His insurance company filled a crucial niche, offering services to Black Americans who were otherwise neglected by white-owned insurance companies. With his wealth, Lewis established amenities open to Black Americans, including the Lincoln Golf & Country Club and American Beach.
