STORYLINE
A barrage of rockets hit the Israeli town of Sderot and the Kibbutz Nir Am after nightfall on Wednesday - the first Hamas rocket attacks since the group took control of Gaza last week.
One rocket hit a house, but there were no immediate reports of casualties, rescue services said.
Cars were also seen damaged in the town of Sderot, a regular target of rocket attacks in the past. In Nir Am, large flames rose into the dark sky where a rocket hit.
Earlier, Israel fired missiles and sent tanks on a foray into Gaza, killing four Palestinians in the deadliest military action since the Hamas takeover of the coastal strip.
Two more Palestinian militants were killed by Israeli army fire in a shootout in the West Bank.
The situation in Gaza has escalated since the ouster of Fatah in the Gaza Strip and the dissolution of the Palestinian coalition government by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Abbas's emergency government in Ramallah - which includes a new prime minister - has won approval from the West and Israel, who have offered immediate resumption of aid and the release of frozen tax funds respectively.
Hamas, now in full control of Gaza, has rejected the move and Ismail Haniyeh claims he is the legitimate prime minister.
Effectively, the situation has left the Palestinians with two parallel governments - one in the West Bank that's willing to negotiate with Israel, and one in Gaza, where militants are sworn to its destruction.
