How big is this massive Mars Canyon? How did such a Canyon form? And would this be a good spot for future astronauts? These are all questions that we discuss in this video!
We start out by introducing Valles Marineris, and some of the surrounding region of Mars. We talk about its dimensions, compare it to the Grand Canyon, and begin discussing how exactly it formed. It was discovered by the Mariner 9 orbiter and is sometimes referred to as the Mariner Valley. Valles Marineris Formation began as the Tharsis region of Mars grew. Over time, the Tharsis region gained mass, which caused a rift fault to occur. Which created a rift valley, this valley would later hold water, and would slowly carve out what we see today. We also discuss what the best way to explore this region would be, mainly focusing on weather balloons and human exploration.
Note: Weather balloons would be very challenging due to the low pressure on Mars, but some scientists at NASA have considered it in the past. Many images of this valley are taken by spacecraft such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and its HIRISE experiment.
Here at Martian Wolf, we aim to learn about different technologies that enable us to make incredible scientific discoveries about space exploration!
