A local resident of Janesville, California, returned from a trip to Reno, Nevada, on August 7, to find her home blanketed in smoke from the Dixie Fire.
Noelle Haller-Riggs was driving home after a mammogram appointment in Reno. She said the “sky kept getting redder” as she was getting closer to home. Haller-Riggs said she cried and started recording a video for her daughter that shows the smoke-shrouded turnoff to her home.
“This is the drive into the house, it’s really settling bad, it’s really scary,” Haller-Riggs says in the video.
“It was like being on a foreign planet but this is my home,” Haller-Riggs told Storyful. "My heart is thankful they are here fighting but my heart is also heavy at the devastation of our forests. "
The Dixie Fire has burnt over 489,000 acres and with 21percent containment as of August 9.
