(7 Oct 2013) Francesco Schettino arrived at court in Grosseto on Monday for the resumption of his trial for causing the shipwreck of the Costa Concordia cruise liner.
Schettino is also charged with manslaughter and abandoning the ship before it was completely evacuated.
The Costa Concordia crashed into a reef, took on water and capsized when Schettino steered it close to the island of Giglio, off the Tuscan coast, in January 2012.
On Monday the court was due to hear from three witnesses - official Giovanni Iaccarino, cartographer Simone Canessa and second mate Salvatore Ursino - who were all with Schettino when he performed the fatal manoeuvre.
Schettino says the reef wasn't on his charts, and that Costa Crociere, the company which operated the ship, should shoulder some of the blame.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
