Juvenile diabetes is a very severe form of diabetes. It is also called as type 1 diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes. Children and young adults are affected more common than adults. There are many causes for juvenile diabetes. It could be hereditary or sudden inflammatory conditions or certain viruses that affect. It is basically an auto immune condition in which our body’s own immune system attack the pancreatic cells which produce insulin and destroy them. This leads to reduced insulin in the body thus leading to high blood sugar levels and type 1 diabetes. Ayurveda can be used as an adjuvant therapy alongside insulin in type 1 diabetes. There are many ayurvedic herbs that have been proved effective in various animal studies as well as patients have vouched to have better sugar control after taking these herbs. I would like to mention 5 herbs which help type 1 diabetes in ayurveda. The first one among them is Gymnema Sylvestre. It is on the forefront of management of diabetes both type 1 and type 2 in ayurveda. Gymnema has been shown to help stop the destruction of beta cells which are the insulin producing cells in type 1 diabetes. It also has been shown to increase regeneration of beta cells in type 1 diabetes when used in animals. We do expect them to have same effect when used in humans. It also been shown to increase insulin production from the beta cells, increase the diameter of the islets in the beta cells. Certain other herbs which boost the immune system and which help to manage auto immunity better are also shown to be very effective as an adjuvant therapy in type 1 diabetes. These are Ashwagandha and also turmeric. They have shown to reduce the destruction of beta cells in pancreas and thus improve the insulin production from the beta cells. To some extent these herbs also improve the regeneration of beta cells in the pancreas. Other herbs like alium sativum or garlic are also seen to be effective in reducing the destruction of beta cells and thus stopping the progression of type 1 diabetes. Other herbs which I would like to mention is called terrocarpus marsupium or Vijaysar. It is found to be extremely effective in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes in managing the blood sugar levels, in improving the insulin secretion from the beta cells and in regeneration of beta cells in the pancreas. Diet and lifestyle changes also help and ayurvedic physicians also insist in finding your body type or prakriti which is unique for each individual, suggesting the right kind of diet and food that suits each and every individual. Type 1 diabetes being a progressive and a lifetime condition requires very specific and precise management in terms of diet and lifestyle rather than one size fits all size type of an approach which is mostly advised by nutritionists. So do get your body type by an ayurvedic expert, see what kind of foods, herbs, diet and precise exercise and yoga suits your body type and this will definitely help management of type 1 diabetes much better.
