If there is air in your Sand Filter it will affect the function of the filtration more so than if you had air in a D.E. or Cartridge type filter. The Sand filter is designed basically to have just sand and water in the tank. As dirty water enters the filter through the top it is drawn through the sand on the bottom and clean water is returned out into the pool. If there is a pocket of air in the top of the filter the flow of water is impeded and the filter will not clean as efficiently. You may also see a rise in the tank pressure even if the filter is relatively clean.
Sometimes you will hear air in your sand filter and even after you bleed it out it will return. You may have an air leak somewhere in your pool plumbing or equipment -at the pump or at the pool valves. Here I walk you through some areas where the air leak may be coming from. The O-ring on top may also be causing the problem. You can remove the multiport valve and check it.
Another common problem is that the pump installed is too much HP -- too large for your filter type. This is very common in the industry. Many installers and builders think that the bigger pump the better. But in most cases that is not true. In the case of your sand filter a very large pump like the one in this video (2 HP) can have adverse effects on the sand filter performance. You will have constant high filter pressure, you will hear gurgling or air type noises coming from the filter and according to the manufacturer the sand can be ground down from a pump with too much HP.
Another thing that could cause a problem is a displaced or damaged air bleeder. If you have a sand filter with a side mount multiport and an air relief and pressure gauge on top --chances are there is a plastic air tube running from the base of the filter up to the top of the filter. Sometimes they come loose or get damaged and this will cause air to be in the filter also.
