The Palm Sunday, also known as the Passion Sunday with its lengthy passion reading from the Gospel of Matthew reminds us that in the complex journey of winning and losing in life to establish ourselves the best, we ought to see Jesus who won ‘LIFE’ for us by giving up His own.
Palm Sunday presents the paradoxes of life that turn palms into nails, praises into curses, acceptance into rejection, clarity into confusion, and one with Jesus into one against Jesus.
The disciples, with Peter as the head, long to demonstrate their faithfulness and love but fail miserably. If the disciples deny, disobey, and flee because of fear and Judas betrays because of greed, the council of religious leaders and Pilate try their best to evade their responsibility towards a just man. The scene at Gethsemane reveals the emptiness of the promises of the disciples. Jesus’ trial reveals the death-dealing machinery of the state, aided and abetted by religious leaders who are more interested in securing one’s religious and political powers, in seeking their own benefits and their own ends rather than serving God and being Just.
At the centre of the narrative, in stark contrast to his unfaithful disciples and adverse opponents, is Jesus the obedient Son of God who continues to resist temptation just as he did after his baptism. The Son of Man identifies with every person who has ever felt God’s absence in moments of deepest need. He dies in agony, all alone but for a cause. The Son of God saves others by not saving himself.
When all these characters who continue to sustain the created disorder brought about initially by the disobedience of Adam, Jesus by his sustained obedience opens the way to a new creation for all God’s children and reveals God’s mysterious purposes amidst the line of paradoxes. Humanity has done its worst, but what humans intended for evil, God intended for good (Genesis 50:20). That’s the mystery of Palm Sunday.
How often have I denied, disobeyed, betrayed in order to secure my benefits and privileges?
What sort of fear gripped me so as to run away from my responsibilities and promises?
Have I been just to the vulnerable?
What sort of disorder have I created due to my disobedience?
Let’s seek for an answer
