On June 21, 1942, General Erwin Rommel achieved a decisive victory in North Africa as his panzer division captured the strategic port of Tobruk in Libya.
After the British had taken control of Tobruk in 1940, the Germans, led by Rommel and the Afrika Korps, launched a relentless assault to reclaim the port. With relentless attacks and superior firepower, Rommel pushed the British Eighth Army into retreat, leaving only the South African Division and the Eleventh Indian Brigade to defend Tobruk.
Employing a combination of artillery, dive-bombers, and panzer forces, Rommel overwhelmed the defenders. Realizing their resistance was futile, South African General Henrik Klopper ordered the surrender of his forces on the morning of June 21. Rommel emerged victorious, capturing over 30,000 prisoners, along with substantial supplies.
Adolf Hitler recognized Rommel's accomplishment by awarding him the coveted field marshal's baton. Determined to press onward, Rommel set his sights on Suez, vowing to continue his campaign across North Africa.
