The lap steel guitar, also known as a Hawaiian guitar, is a type of steel guitar without pedals which is typically played with the instrument in a horizontal position on the performer's lap or otherwise supported. The performer changes pitch by pressing a polished steel bar (the origin of the name "steel guitar") against plucked strings. This differs from a traditional guitar where the performer's fingertips press the strings against frets. Steel guitars do not use frets, but have markers that resemble them. The lap steel is distinguished from the pedal steel guitar; the lap steel has no pedals.

The archetypal lap steel originated the Hawaiian Islands about 1885 when Joseph Kekuku became proficient in playing a traditional guitar across his lap using a piece of metal on the strings. This way of playing, with its characteristic portamento sliding notes, became popular throughout the islands, then internationally. American popular culture embraced Hawaiian music in the U.S. mainland during the first half of the twentieth century to the degree of its becoming a musical "craze". Lap steel guitar and other indigenous Hawaiian instruments were featured in motion pictures, Broadway shows, and radio broadcasts; record sales of Hawaiian music outsold all other U.S. genres in 1916. In the 1930s, the invention of electric amplification for the lap steel was a milestone in its evolution; it meant that the instrument could be heard equally with other instruments and that it no longer needed any resonant chamber. The electrified lap steel could then be manufactured in any shape (even a rectangular block) with little or no resemblance of a traditional guitar. This lead to more complex instruments too heavy to be played on the lap; they were built in a rectangular frame with legs, called "console steels".

During the first half of the twentieth century the Hawaiian guitar was adapted to other musical styles including blues, gospel, country music and particularly country music sub-genres, Western swing, honky-tonk, and bluegrass. Lap steel pioneers include Sol Hoopii, Bob Dunn, Jerry Byrd, Don Helms, Bud Isaacs, Leon McAuliffe, Josh Graves, Pete Kirby, and Darick Campbell.
