As Yoda once said, fear is the pathway to the dark side. Unfortunately, the Jedi did not practice this themselves and were deeply fearful of the Sith and any deviation into the dark side. One particularly egregious example showcasing how the Jedis fear of the sith led them to commit dark side acts was commited in the Old Republic era by a group known as the Jedi Covenant. The covenant sought to use force visione to try and determine who would fall to the dark side in the future. One day a group of Jedi masters would experience a shared force vision of their deaths at the hands of a red armoured sith, also seeing the destruction of the Jedi order and the Republic. As their padawans were wearing red armour at the time, they assumed it was them who would fall to the dark side and so they killed them in a fake knighting ceremony. Only one Padawan named Carrick would survive and he went on the run as the Jedi blamed him for the padawans deaths. All the Jedi masters would eventually die as the prophecy predicted, although none of the deaths had anything to do with the padawans or the sith. Even the Jedi would realise how fear of the sith had resulted in these masters committing dark side acts and so the use of prophecies became heavily frowned upon.
