Here is the next "Off The Wall" remix as I slowly complete remxing each track from the iconic LP from 1979.
Michael Jackson was an artist who could comfortably perform all kinds of music, he could be loud and boisterous like "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", smooth and sexy like "Rock With You" and up close and personal with "She's Out Of My Life" the loveliest ballad he ever sang.
He was also a very creative perfectionist, to wit there are seven vocal tracks on the master tape, six of them are overdubs. The original single used one main vocal throughout the song and I have done the same here, the reason being that the vocal overdubs detract from the intimacy of the simple music track. I tried many different combinations to make the song work but they did nothing to add to an already stellar performance. Can't fault the man for trying.
The instrumental track has 3 tracks of rhodes keyboards, 2 tracks of strings, bass and 4 guitar tracks that beef up the presence and perfectly frames Micheal's voice which is elegantly restrained right up to the slight sobbing at the very end. Quincy Jones production of the song is expertly nuanced and never takes the focus away from Michael's voice.
Released as a single on April 19, 1980 it was the highest new entry on the Hot100 debuting at #57 spending 11 weeks on the chart and peaking at #10.
