"Growing Up Healthy in the 20th Century"
Nathalie Lampron
At the turn of the 20th century, one child in four dies in Quebec by the age of one. In an urban environment, where overcrowding is exacerbated by poor hygiene, polluted air, and often tainted water and milk, infants are dying of diarrhea or contagious diseases. To eradicate this scourge, public health campaigns emphasize cleanliness and fresh air, along with the treatment of water and the pasteurization of milk.
