In a woman who is using contraceptive devices, say Copper T as a method of contraception, because Copper T is a foreign body, there is a high chance for infection whenever there is unprotected sexual activity. So the vaginal infection can also lead to cervicitis and also spread up into the pelvis and can cause pelvis infection. Because of the close proximity of the vagina to the urethral meatus, the infection can always spread to the urethral orifice if not treated in an initial stage, it can cause urethritis, and it can spread to the bladder causing cystitis and also cause pyelonephritis or the upper urinary infection. So Copper T device is always prone for infection and good sexual hygiene has to be maintained whenever a foreign device like Copper T is in situ and these infections can spread to the uterus and to the urinary tract and has to be treated at the earliest onset.
