Tens of thousands of pro-independence Catalonians descended on the European Commission headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on Thursday demanding for Europe to wake up and hear their voices.
Some 45,000 Catalonians traveled from Barcelona and other parts of Spain to join their now deposed President Carles Puigdemont in the city which is considered the de facto capital of the European Union.
The protesters expressed their hope that the EU will intervene against -- what many here are calling -- the oppression of the Spanish state which has criminally prosecuted their elected leaders and ignored their right to self determination.
"It comes to a point that it is not about independence anymore, it's about democracy. We should have the right to decide if we want independence," said Carmena, a Catalonia pro-independence protester.
Another protester named Riccard said that he thought the protest was the only way to show the rest of the world what it is like to be Catalan.
The EU authorities responded that they have no authority to intervene in the growing national crisis, but would definitely continue to monitor the situation closely.
