Actually, I didn't find any picture where he smiled (knowing that this is related to time and not so much personality...)
Anyways! This piece is probably quite known and so I will explain why the tempo is relatively high: This represents a song to me, and the first notes are the melody of " so - laaaach - dooch - maaal".
I don't think this sounds too good (in this sense) if incredibly slow... while playing i simply said it in my head to somebody. Admittedly, the very slow upload on imslp sounds really amazing and better than this recording. But hey, here is the score to read with at least. Apart from that, it shows the "not to underestimate" qualities of Nietzsche as a composer. The song, or -chanson- to sound better, is quite sad in my opinion and very beautiful. It was composed in 1862, and the picture is from 1875 (around).
