Protesting supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed Brazil's Congress building. According to local media reports, the Supreme Court was also raided. New head of state Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been evacuated to a safe zone away from central Brazil
Brazilian police used tear gas in an attempt to push back Bolsonaro supporters from the congressional district.
The authorities tried to cordon off a security zone, but the protesters, who refuse to accept the election victory of Lula da Silva, managed to break through the cordons, several dozen of them managed to climb the ramp of this building with modern architecture and climb onto its roof
The first footage released is reminiscent of the storming of the US Capitol and shows a veritable wave of people flocking to Congress.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that a decision has been made to use the military to quell the protests. The meetings of both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate are held in this building, notes AFP.
Demonstrators appeared on the roof, but also on all the surrounding lawns, including the one in front of the Planalto presidential palace.
Jair Bolsonaro, who was narrowly defeated by Lula da Silva in the October 30 presidential runoff, left Brazil late last year for the United States.
