Your skull is a very special part of your body because it has the very important job of protecting your brain.

Now, let's think about how many bones are in your skull. Your skull is not just one big bone, but is made up of several bones all fitted together.

The adult human skull is usually made up of 22 bones. There are 8 bones that form the cranium, which is the part that surrounds and protects your brain. Then there are 14 bones that form your face.

When you were a baby, these bones were not tightly joined together. This is so your head could change shape to make it easier for you to be born. Over time, these bones join together as you grow up.

But there's something interesting about your jawbone, also known as the mandible. Some people count it as a bone of the skull, while others do not. If you count the mandible, then you would say there are 23 bones in the skull!
