Since Edith Barry founded the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk, Maine, in 1936, we have ignited personal connections to local history, art and culture. Protected within our walls are the stories of people. Well-known, unknown, or somewhere in between, every story matters.
The "Kennebunk Voices" series presents performances of archival letters written by historical Kennebunkers through the centuries.
This episode presents John Millards letter written in 1880 to Captain Dudley.
Hong Kong, June 4, 1880
To Capt. Dudley
My dear Sir,
I am very sorry that my boy, Percy, has given you any trouble. I expect he is a little home sick, and under the influence of that feeling has resorted to artifice* to try and get back again to Victoria. I feel quite sure that the discipline of a sea life will be the greatest blessing that can happen to him and I have full confidence in your oversight and care of him. When he gets over the first few weeks I have no doubt he will settle down properly to his duties.
With best respects to Mrs. Dudley and wishing you a successful voyage.
I remain yours truly
John S. Millard
