READ MORE: Oleksandr Ruvin, the director of the Kyiv Forensic Institute who led the investigation team, said they had taken samples that would allow them to more precisely identify the type of missile used to shoot down the plane.
Ruvin also said the investigators had found the nose of the plane buried in the ground, and that the lower part of the plane still appeared to be missing.
Iran shot down the plane on January 8 when its military was on high alert, hours after firing missiles at U.S. targets in Iraq. It admitted the mistake, Saturday, January 11, after days of denials.
Since the official admission, protesters, many of them students, have held daily demonstrations, chanting "Clerics get lost!" and calling for the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in power for more than 30 years.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani pledged Tuesday to punish those responsible for the accidental downing of a Ukrainian passenger jet, calling the incident "unforgivable."
In a televised speech, Rouhani called for a special court to be set up, and said, "the whole world will be watching."
Also Tuesday, an Iranian judiciary spokesman said some people had been arrested for their role in shooting down the plane, but did not specify how many or how they were connected. (VOA/Reuters)
