Viral gastroenteritis can cause an upset stomach, making it challenging to know what to eat.
Here’s how to nourish your body during recovery.
First, let your stomach settle. Avoid solid foods for a few hours and sip on broth, teas or noncaffeinated sports drinks.
Stay hydrated by drinking small amounts frequently. Once you’re up for it, ease into eating bland foods like mashed potatoes, toast and rice.
Be cautious with medications like ibuprofen, which can worsen stomach issues.
If symptoms are severe, over-the-counter medications may help, but always consult your healthcare team.
Dehydration is a major concern, so keep fluids going to combat loss from vomiting and diarrhea.
Stomach bugs are typically manageable at home, but watch for red flags: severe dehydration, bloody stools or symptoms lasting over a week. These symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional, especially for young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
To help prevent stomach bugs, wash your hands thoroughly, particularly in winter and spring when stomach bugs peak.
