First-time seizures are commonly encountered in the emergency department in addition to more generally in medical practice. However, it can be difficult to differentiate a seizure from syncope, stroke, or other causes of loss of consciousness. This course provides the trainee or medical student with a systematic approach to the patient presenting with a potential seizure. We will discuss how to determine if a patient had a seizure, types of seizure, whether the event was provoked, and general guidelines for when to start anti-seizure medications.
