(13 Mar 2014) Fresh clashes broke out between pro-unity demonstrators and pro-Russia activists in the eastern town of Donetsk on Thursday.
They gathered in the square in front of the regional administration building on Thursday afternoon.
They shouted "Donetsk is Ukraine," in a show of support to prevent Ukraine from splitting.
But the demonstration was soon taken over by pro-Russia activists waving the Russian flag.
Pro-Russian protesters threw fire crackers and eggs at the pro-unity demonstrators.
Police formed a line to stop the confrontation between the two groups and to protect the regional administration building.
Donetsk, the home city of deposed president Viktor Yanukovich, has seen the most persistent pro-Moscow support since Russian troops occupied Crimea.
Most Ukrainians in the eastern and southern regions of the country speak Russian as a native language.
Many are deeply suspicious of the government in Kiev.
